On February 1, 1960, a group of passionate sportsmen in Better Hope village came together to establish what would become one of the East Coast Demerara's most enduring sporting institutions.
Better Hope Sports Club — known affectionately as BHSC — was born from the belief that sport can unite a community, develop young people, and create lasting bonds across generations. Named after the Dutch-era Plantation Betterhoop, the village of Better Hope sits along the East Coast of Demerara between La Bonne Intention (LBI) and Lusignan, near Plaisance and Vryheid's Lust.
For over six decades, the club has been the sporting heartbeat of a village with more than 3,000 residents, predominantly of East Indian heritage and steeped in Hindu culture. What began as a cricket club has grown into a multi-sport organization competing in cricket, football, basketball, table tennis, and volleyball.
With a home ground at the Better Hope Community Centre Ground on Centre Road and Narine Street, BHSC holds the distinction of being a DCB First Division club affiliated with the East Coast Cricket Board (Zone B) and recognized by the Guyana Cricket Board.
To provide a structured, inclusive sporting environment that develops athletes, builds character, and strengthens the fabric of the Better Hope community. Through competitive cricket and multi-sport programs, we aim to create opportunities for residents of all ages to pursue excellence on and off the field.
To be the premier community sports club on the East Coast of Demerara — recognized for producing outstanding athletes, fostering youth development, and reviving the proud sporting traditions that have defined Better Hope for generations. We envision a club where every young person has the chance to discover their potential.
"In Pursuit of Excellence" — these words guide everything we do at BHSC. From the senior cricket team competing in DCB First Division to our youngest members picking up a bat for the first time, we strive for continuous improvement, discipline, and sportsmanship.
Community first, excellence always. We believe in inclusivity — welcoming members aged 11 and above with no upper limit. We value teamwork, respect, dedication, and the power of sport to transform lives. Every member is part of the BHSC family.
From humble beginnings in 1960 to the revitalization of 2026, each milestone has shaped the club we are today.
Better Hope Sports Club is officially established on February 1, 1960, by a group of dedicated sportsmen in Better Hope village. The club begins as a community cricket organization with the vision of uniting the village through sport.
Better Hope's own Moses Dwarka achieves legendary status, winning three gold medals in the Half-Marathon at the British West Indies Championships and two bronze medals in the 10,000m. He goes on to represent Guyana at the Commonwealth Games and Pan American Championships, becoming one of the village's greatest sporting heroes.
In honor of the legendary athlete, a street in Better Hope is officially renamed "Moses Dwarka Drive" during a ceremony recognizing his contribution to Guyanese athletics. Jainarine Singh serves as club President during this period of renewed community pride.
The Better Hope diaspora team in Canada captures the OSCL Vish Jadunauth 10/10 Championship in 2023, defeating Caribbean Sensation. They follow up in 2024 by winning the Albert Ramcharran 15-Over Championship, cementing their reputation on the international softball cricket circuit. Davendra Ramkissoon leads the bowling charts with 16 wickets.
On February 12, 2026, an Interim Management Committee is formed to streamline and revitalize the club. Membership registration opens to all ages 11+. Three BHSC youths are selected for the Demerara U16 squad. Community meetings bring fresh energy and a clear vision for the future. A new era begins.
Better Hope's greatest athlete and one of Guyana's most celebrated sporting sons.
Moses Dwarka is the most celebrated athlete ever to emerge from Better Hope village. Known as "The Barefoot King" for his remarkable ability to compete without shoes, Dwarka dominated Caribbean distance running from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s.
His achievements include three gold medals in the Half-Marathon at the British West Indies Championships (1959–1965), two bronze medals in the 10,000m, and selection to represent Guyana at both the Commonwealth Games and Pan American Championships. His extraordinary talent and humble origins made him an inspiration to generations of athletes.
In 2018, the village honored his memory by officially renaming a street "Moses Dwarka Drive" — a permanent testament to his legacy. Dwarka's story embodies the very essence of BHSC's motto: the relentless pursuit of excellence against all odds.
Once the pride of the village — a weekend-long celebration of sport, community, and togetherness.
The Better Hope Games were a beloved community tradition that transformed the village grounds into a festive arena of sporting competition. Villagers of all ages would gather to compete for prizes across multiple disciplines, while sweetie booths, toy booths, and food vendors turned the event into a vibrant community festival.
The grounds would overflow with participants and spectators, creating memories that older residents still recall with pride and nostalgia. The Games represented everything that makes Better Hope special — unity, friendly competition, and celebration of community.
As part of the 2026 revitalization efforts, there are active plans to revive the Better Hope Games — bringing back this cherished tradition for a new generation while honoring the spirit of those who came before.
